Background & Needs
Analysis
1.
Background Of The Project
(1)
The “Introduction of Environmental Sciences program for
the Faculty of Education” complies with the higher
education objectives of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher
Education in particular with the strategic priorities of
the Educational Faculties in Egypt.
(2) The present curricula of Educational Faculties in
Assiut University suffer from
a:
-
Lack of Environmental Sciences educational
programs and research.
-
Lack of the Environmental thinking and
awareness to pay attention to the pollution of surface and ground water, soil and air by biological and
chemical hazards with its implication for both health
and economic.
(3) Four years ago, the
High Council of Egyptian Universities recommended an
introduction of one-hour Environmental Sciences course
in the curriculum of undergraduate level at all the
Egyptian higher education institutions.
(4) Up till now, the
preparation of Environmental Sciences program, to be
introduced in the higher education institutions, is not
activated.
(5) In the present state, the
B.Sc&E graduated
students of science group
“Biology
and Geology”
are responsible to teach Science Course in
Preparatory Schools, and to teach Biology, Geology
and Environmental Sciences Courses in Secondary
Schools.
(6) The
problem now is the complete absence of
teaching/learning Environmental Sciences courses from
the present B.Sc&E curricula of Faculty of Education.
Moreover, the in-service teachers of Preparatory and
Secondary schools did not study Environmental Sciences
courses before. Accordingly, they are not qualified and
have no skills for the process of “Environmental
Sciences Education” .
(7) The
Faculty of Education Council, Assiut University, in his
meeting number (413) at 14/3/2004 agreed and recommended
to develop the curriculum of Science Group “Biology &
Geology” by introducing Environmental Science courses
and to modify the name of degree into B.Sc&E degree in
“Biology, Geology & Environmental Sciences”.
How The Proposed Project Satisfies The Targeted Specific
Objectives And Relevance To National/University
Enhancement Strategy:
2. Needs Analysis of the
project
(1) Due to the
complete absence of Environmental Sciences courses
from the curricula of Faculty of Education, there is
an urgent need to develop the curriculum “by
Introduction of Environmental Sciences Education
Program in undergraduate level” to design a new
specialty degree in “B Sc & E in Biology, Geology
and Environmental Sciences” within the Science
Group.
(2) Moreover, there is
an urgent need to improve skills of in-service teachers
of Preparatory and Secondary schools
(Training of Trainers “TOT”)
in Environmental Sciences Education, because they are
not qualified and have no skills for the education in
this subject area. On the other hand, the teachers whom
graduated before 1996 and obtained B.Sc&E degree only in
“Biology” are not qualified in teaching “Geology
Courses” and need to improve their skills in this
subject area.
(3) The curriculum
development for this new specialty needs: 1. Preparation
of new high quality environmental sciences computer
based courses modules, 2. Modernization of
teaching/learning resources and 3. Skills development of
teaching staff (TOT).
